Interpretation of Electron Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry for Hydrogen Quantification

چکیده
In the last few years several papers have appeared showing the capabilities of Electron Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (eRBS) to quantify the H content at surfaces. The basis of the H detection in this technique relies on the difference in recoil energy of the incident electrons depending on the mass of the atoms located at the surface that act as scatter centers. In this paper we address the interpretation of eRBS spectra of Hydrogen containing surfaces. The aim is to compare the naïve single elastic scattering approximation with a more realistic description of eRBS spectra including multiple elastic scattering using the HQeRBS (Hydrogen Quantification eRBS) software based on a Monte Carlo algorithm. It is concluded that multiple elastic scattering is a significant contribution to experimentally measured eRBS spectra of a polyethylene surface. It induces significant broadening of the distribution of the maximum elastic scattering angle along the electron trajectories contributing to the measured spectra. However, it has weak effect in the energy distribution of the collected electrons (about 10% overestimation of the H content in the particular case of a polyethylene surface with respect to the corresponding ratio of elastic scattering cross sections).

Techniques for Measuring the Composition of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon-Germanium Alloys: Preprint Prepared for ICAMS
We grow hydrogenated amorphous silicon-germanium alloys by the hot-wire chemical vapor deposition technique at deposition rates between 0.5 and 1.4 nanometers per second. We prepared a set of these alloys to determine the concentrations of the alloying elements as measured by various techniques. This set consists of samples throughout the range of germanium alloying from 0% (a-Si:H) to 100% (a-...

Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) is a widely used method for the surface layer analysis of solids. This lecture gives a brief introduction into the method, and describes scattering kinematics, scattering cross-section data, stopping power data, detector resolution issues, and electronic energy loss straggling in some detail. Computer codes for the simulation of RBS spectra and RBS d...
متن کاملUniform distribution of post-synthetic linker exchange in metal–organic frameworks revealed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry†
Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) has been used for the first time to study post-synthetic linker exchange (PSE) in metal-organic frameworks. RBS is a non-invasive method to quantify the amount of introduced linker, as well as providing a means for depth profiling in order to identify the preferred localization of the introduced linker. The exchange of benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) by s...
متن کاملA multi-ion beam microanalysis approach for the characterization of plasma polymerized allylamine films
A full characterization of plasma polymerized biofunctional films requires the use of multianalytical approaches to determine the chemical composition, topography and potential interaction mechanisms of such films with biomolecules and cells. In this work we aim at underlining the versatility of ion-based techniques to contribute to the chemical characterization of plasma polymerized surfaces. ...
متن کاملAccurate determination of quantity of material in thin films by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry.
Ion beam analysis (IBA) is a cluster of techniques including Rutherford and non-Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Recently, the ability to treat multiple IBA techniques (including PIXE) self-consistently has been demonstrated. The utility of IBA for accurately depth profiling thin films is critically reviewed. As an important example of IBA, thre...
